Why This Work Matters

When the Environment Suffers, Communities Suffer

Environmental degradation affects far more than the natural world. Drought, water scarcity, coastal pollution, and land degradation impact livelihoods, food security, education, health, and community stability.

For many communities across the Horn of Africa, these challenges determine whether families can thrive, survive, or are forced to leave their homes.

Our Mission

Restoring the Environment. Empowering Women. Building Peace.

At Dhamal Earth Initiative, we believe that environmental restoration is not only about protecting nature—it is about protecting people, preserving dignity, and creating the conditions for lasting peace.

We are a women-led organization dedicated to restoring degraded ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience, empowering vulnerable communities, and creating sustainable opportunities across the Horn of Africa. Our work focuses on communities living on the frontlines of environmental crises, where recurring droughts, land degradation, water scarcity, and loss of livelihoods continue to fuel poverty, displacement, and conflict.

The Challenge We Address

For generations, pastoralist families have depended on healthy rangelands, reliable water sources, and productive ecosystems. Today, climate change and environmental degradation are placing enormous pressure on these resources. As grazing lands disappear and water becomes increasingly scarce, communities are forced into difficult choices that can lead to conflict, migration, and instability.

Women and children bear the greatest burden of these challenges. They travel longer distances in search of water, face increased economic hardship, and often become the first victims of environmental collapse. Yet they are also the strongest agents of change.

Dhamal Earth Initiative was founded on the belief that when women are empowered to lead environmental solutions, entire communities become stronger, more resilient, and more peaceful.

Our Strategy

Through community nurseries, reforestation initiatives, sustainable fodder production, water access projects, environmental education, and coastal conservation programs, we help communities restore the natural resources upon which their livelihoods depend.

Our approach is rooted in local leadership, community ownership, and long-term sustainability. We work alongside local women, youth, elders, and community leaders to develop practical solutions that address immediate environmental needs while creating lasting social and economic benefits.

Core Impact Areas

  • By planting trees, we restore degraded landscapes.

  • By improving access to water, we strengthen livelihoods.

  • By establishing fodder systems, we reduce pressure on fragile ecosystems.

  • By engaging youth in environmental stewardship, we create alternatives to violence, extremism, and instability.

  • By empowering women, we strengthen families, communities, and future generations.

Environmental Restoration as Peacebuilding

Our mission extends beyond environmental conservation. We recognize that environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and climate shocks are often underlying drivers of conflict and forced migration. Therefore, every tree planted, every water source rehabilitated, and every young person engaged in environmental action contributes to a broader vision of peace, stability, and opportunity.

Our Vision

We envision a future where:

  • Communities no longer have to leave their homelands because of environmental collapse.

  • Women are recognized as leaders of environmental restoration.

  • Young people become champions of positive change.

  • Healthy ecosystems provide the foundation for thriving, peaceful, and resilient communities.

Together, we are restoring landscapes, protecting livelihoods, empowering women, and building a greener, more peaceful future for the Horn of Africa.

Our Vision

A Horn of Africa where healthy ecosystems, empowered women, and resilient communities work together to create sustainable livelihoods, environmental security, and lasting peace.

Women Leading Environmental Restoration, Resilient Communities, and Lasting Peace

Dhamal Earth Initiative is a women-led organization dedicated to advancing women's leadership in environmental restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable development across the Horn of Africa.

We work alongside communities facing drought, land degradation, water scarcity, and livelihood loss—challenges that disproportionately affect women and girls. Despite these barriers, women remain at the heart of community resilience, environmental stewardship, and economic recovery.

We believe that when women are empowered with knowledge, resources, and leadership opportunities, they can transform communities, protect natural ecosystems, and build pathways to peace and prosperity.

Through reforestation, women-led community nurseries, water access initiatives, sustainable fodder production, environmental education, and coastal conservation programs, we create opportunities for women to strengthen livelihoods while restoring the environment.

Our approach is rooted in women's leadership, community ownership, and long-term sustainability. By supporting women as environmental champions, entrepreneurs, educators, and decision-makers, we help create stronger families, healthier ecosystems, and more resilient communities.

We envision a Horn of Africa where women lead environmental solutions, drive sustainable development, and inspire future generations to thrive in harmony with nature.

Featured Program

The Roots of Peace Initiative

Our flagship initiative connects environmental restoration, water access, pastoralist support, women’s leadership, youth engagement, and peacebuilding into one integrated approach.

Because lasting peace begins with resilient communities—and resilient communities begin with healthy environments.

Women Leading Environmental Change

Women often experience the greatest impacts of climate and environmental challenges. They also possess the leadership, knowledge, and determination needed to drive meaningful change.

As a women-led organization, we place women at the center of environmental restoration and community resilience

Giving Young People a Reason to Believe in Tomorrow

Young people deserve opportunity, purpose, and hope.

Through environmental service, leadership development, and community action, we help youth become active participants in shaping a more sustainable and peaceful future.

Creating Lasting Change

Our impact is measured through restored landscapes, empowered women, engaged youth, cleaner coastlines, improved water access, and stronger community resilience.
