Youth for Clean Oceans: Protecting Our Coastlines and Building a Safer Future

The Ocean Gives Us Life

The coastlines of the Horn of Africa are among the most beautiful and ecologically important in the world. They provide food, livelihoods, cultural identity, and economic opportunities for millions of people.

Yet these coastlines face growing threats. Plastic waste, marine pollution, abandoned fishing gear, and poor waste management are damaging fragile marine ecosystems. Beaches that once supported thriving biodiversity are increasingly burdened by pollution that harms wildlife, fisheries, and local communities. Protecting our oceans is no longer optional—it is essential.

Why Youth Are at the Center of the Solution

Young people represent the future of our communities. They bring energy, innovation, and a deep desire to create positive change.

Unfortunately, many young people also face limited economic opportunities, unemployment, and social exclusion. In vulnerable regions, these conditions can increase the risk of recruitment by criminal networks and extremist groups seeking to exploit frustration and hopelessness.

At Dhamal Earth Initiative, we believe that youth are not part of the problem—they are the solution.

Turning Environmental Action Into Opportunity

Our Ocean Clean Program engages young people as environmental leaders and community changemakers. Through organized beach cleanups, environmental awareness campaigns, and community mobilization efforts, youth become active participants in protecting the ecosystems that support their communities.

Each cleanup event is more than a volunteer activity. It is an opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills, teamwork, environmental knowledge, and civic responsibility.

Protecting Marine Life

Our coastal cleanup activities help remove harmful waste that threatens marine ecosystems. These efforts contribute to the protection of:

  • Sea turtles

  • Coastal birds

  • Fish populations

  • Coral ecosystems

  • Mangrove habitats

By reducing pollution, we help preserve biodiversity and strengthen the health of coastal environments for future generations.

Preventing Vulnerability to Extremism

Environmental engagement can also strengthen community resilience. When young people feel connected to their communities, involved in meaningful work, and invested in a positive future, they are less vulnerable to exploitation by extremist organizations.

Our program creates spaces where youth can:

  • Develop leadership skills

  • Participate in community service

  • Build positive social networks

  • Gain environmental education

  • Become ambassadors for peace and environmental stewardship

These activities help foster a sense of belonging, purpose, and responsibility.

Creating a Generation of Environmental Leaders

Our vision goes beyond beach cleanups. We are building a movement of young environmental champions who understand that protecting nature and strengthening communities go hand in hand.

Every bag of waste collected, every awareness campaign conducted, and every young person empowered brings us one step closer to cleaner oceans, stronger communities, and a more peaceful future. The future of our coastlines is in the hands of the next generation—and they are already leading the way.
